Iowa Evangelical Kingmaker Gives Ted Cruz His Blessing

Drawing contrasts with some of his Republican rivals, Cruz opposed expanded surveillance powers, saying the ones that exist already threaten civil liberties.

Ted Cruz (R-TX) picked up a big endorsement in Iowa the day after he questioned Donald Trump’s judgment during a private fund-raiser.

Dole also said it was unbecoming of Cruz to call Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky a “liar” on the Senate floor.

Rubio and Cruz, who are close in opinion polls of the Republican field, have battled over national security and Syria. Trump said the ban would apply to refugees, tourists, and even American citizens who happened to be traveling overseas. A CNN poll released last month gave Carson 23 percent in Iowa, just two points behind front-runner Trump’s 25 percent. His fellow senator Marco Rubio of Florida comes in third with 17 percent support, and former neurosurgeon Ben Carson nets 13 percent support.

“You look at Paris, you look at San Bernardino, it’s given a seriousness to this race”, Cruz said.

On the Democratic side, the Monmouth University Poll showed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with a 55 percent to 33 percent lead over Sen. In October, the poll said, 36 percent of Iowa evangelicals backed Carson. Both Republicans have a strong base of support with evangelical voters, who make up a large bloc among likely caucus-goers in Iowa.

Right now, Trump is maintaining a narrow lead in the state, according to the RealClearPolitics rolling average of major polls. “And (Trump) probably espouses that better than anybody else”.

“Winning the most Republican delegates, yes, 25%, 30%, whatever”, he says, trying to downplay the reach of Trump’s support.

There’s a growing consensus among Iowa’s conservatives that they must elect someone this time around who can get past the early voting states as Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum struggled to do. Trump led among those who were not regular primary voters. Only 20% say they have completely decided on their choice for the GOP nomination. Carson’s stock has since fallen by 19 percentage points while Cruz has gained by 14 percentage points, reports The New York Times.

“If Cruz wins Iowa, the momentum that he’s gonna come out of there with is going to be overwhelming, and he’s gonna be piling up delegates”, Limbaugh argued. I believe that gravity will bring both of those campaigns down.

Since then, as foreign policy and terrorism became more important to Republican voters, Carson’s support diminished.

“The first thing I notice is that the sample size is only 425, with a [margin of error] of 4.8 (5)% points”, Traugott said in an email.
