Soltas was among 869 applicants who were endorsed by 316 colleges and universities. Scholars are also expected to “be committed to make a strong difference for good in the world, be concerned for the welfare of others, and be conscious of inequities”.
The Rhodes Scholarships were established by Cecil Rhodes, a British industrialist who lived in South Africa and later founded Rhodesia, the region in Southern Africa now named Zimbabwe.
The Rhodes Scholarship provides recipients’ tuition costs for two to three years at the University of Oxford in England. He arrived at the UI as a first-year presidential scholar, the highest award the UI gives to incoming undergraduates. Both scholarships cover full tuition, living accommodations and other expenses.
Jay Ruckelshaus, a senior with a triple minor in philosophy, history and English, is among 32 American men and women chosen as Rhodes scholars.
