USA wireless carriers Sprint (S) and T-Mobile US (TMUS) have announced that Apple (AAPL) iPhone 7 pre-orders are off to a strong start, countering earlier reports that indicated weak demand for the new smartphones. The latest handsets, which are slated to be available to customers starting September 16, have already outranked previous iPhone preorder numbers at T-Mobile so far and set a single-day preorder sales record for any smartphone ever offered by T-Mobile, according to a September 13 statement by the company.

Also on Tuesday, T-Mobile US Inc. and Sprint Corp. each issued news releases suggesting strong consumer interest in the new phones.
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available from September 16 at T-Mobile stores nationwide and online, while MetroPCS customers will get it from September 23.
Like the current iPhone6, the iPhone 7 comes in two sizes, a 4.7 inch display and a plus version with almost an inch more screen area. In a similar Morning Consult survey last year, 33 percent of respondents aware of the iPhone 6S said they were likely to buy the handset at initial availability, compared to 25 percent for the new iPhone 7 this year.

The carriers’ reports contradict a survey released Monday that said iPhone 7 demand was down compared with the demand for the iPhone 6 a year ago.
iPhone 7 battery capacity is 1960mAh, an increase from 1715mAh on the iPhone 6S. Up until now, every one of Apple’s iPhone hardware updates has been additive.
With the launch of the iPhone 7, Apple has managed to divide opinion mainly due to the removal of the headphone jack from the handset. That is “mostly” because the $769 starting price for the larger iPhone 7 Plus in the United States is $20 more than comparable past models.
