Dropbox just got quite an impressive update, all with the objective of improving productivity. Since its launch in 2008, Dropbox has now gained more than 500 million signups with users, creating 3.3 billion connections who share different files with each other.

On the mobile front, Dropbox added a new document scanning function directly in the mobil app. Dropbox now has document scanning so you can capture whiteboards, receipts, sketches, and save them directly to your cloud. As of this date, Dropbox Basic users will need to have the Dropbox desktop application installed to continue using camera uploads.

It should be noted that the scanned documents are not just a picture of the document that will act like any other image once uploaded. If you have Dropbox Business, you’ll even be able to search through the text of each scanned document.

Dropbox offers two solutions for free users who want to upload photos to the service.

Files and folders can now be shared using desktop context integration for Mac Finder and Windows Explorer without going via the web or email.

Mainly because Dropbox is in constant need to provide the users a reason to fill their folders all the time with bulky files and hence pay for the extra storage. With the new Dropbox iOS application you will be able to experience a certain kind of smartness that you have never been able to see before. It’s also worth mentioning that the company has made no comments as to when they’ll be rolling out the update to the Android app.

Now you can also add comments to a specific part of the file, in case you don’t like a particular part of the design or want some changes in it just highlight the same and add your comments.

The tool also enables users to convert existing images in either their Dropbox folders or iPhone Camera Rolls into PDF or PNG documents. Recovering old files will become a lot easier with this update.

The new features will roll out “in the coming days”. Edit access can be given on desktop, mobile apps and dropbox.com. Those logs can be viewed through an online administrator console, but are also accessible through the company’s API.

The news comes a week after Drew Houston, the company’s co-founder and CEO, revealed at a conference that Dropbox is operating cash flow positive.
