Iran on Thursday accused the Saudi-led coalition battling Shiite rebels in Yemen of hitting its embassy there in an overnight airstrike, but the building bore no visible damage.

“This is was a targeted and deliberate attack by the Saudis”.

In the early hours of January 3, furious demonstrators in the Iranian cities of Tehran and Mashhad stormed Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic buildings in protest at the Al Saud’s execution of the popular cleric.

The cleric was executed by Saudi authorities last week along with another 46 people convicted of terrorism charges, drawing immediate condemnation from Iran and its allies in the Middle East.

He said the coalition would investigate Iran’s accusation and added that the Houthis has used civilian facilities including abandoned embassies. Gen. Ahmed Asseri told Reuters.

The demonstrators chanted slogans against Saudi Arabia, likening the Riyadh regime to the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

In his first reaction to Saturday’s executions in Saudi Arabia that have sparked a regional row between Tehran and Riyadh, Erdogan alleged that a “mastermind” was behind the growing tensions, whose aim was to “shatter” the Muslim world.

“For the past two-and-a-half years, Saudi Arabia has opposed Iran’s diplomacy”, Zarif said at a joint press conference in Tehran with visiting Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari.

“This deliberate action by Saudi Arabia is a violation of all global conventions that protect diplomatic missions”, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari was quoted as saying by state TV channel IRIB, AFP reported.

The nuclear deal, once implemented, would gradually eliminate some sanctions against the Islamic republic, potentially posing a challenge to Saudi Arabia, which has been pumping out more oil to reduce prices, partly in anticipation of Iran rejoining the market.
