The aircraft carrier reportedly was being escorted by a United States destroyer and a French frigate.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari said here on Thursday that his countyr will respond to any new USA sanctions and interfering measures over its defensive missile program.
After 23 minutes, the Iranian boats fired “several unguided rockets” about 1,370 meters (1,500 yards) from the warships and commercial traffic, he said.
Board members of the United Nations nuclear agency on Tuesday adopted a resolution to close the investigation into whether Tehran once had a nuclear weapons program, upon a review of Iran’s implementation of its commitments under a nuclear deal endorsed by the UN Security Council in July. Congress is being informed about those deliberations, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he wasn’t authorized to publicly disclose the information.
Such a step by the US Treasury Department would be the first American sanctions against Iran since the nuclear agreement and presents a potential barrier to its durability.
In the past, Iran has threatened to block the strait, which lies at the entrance of the Arabian Gulf. Ships traversing the chokepoint have even less room to manoeuvre. The shipping lane in either direction is only 2 miles (3.22 kilometers) wide, with a 2-mile (3.22-kilometer) buffer zone between them.
“While most interactions between Iranian forces and the US Navy are professional, safe, and routine, this event was not and runs contrary to efforts to ensure freedom of navigation and maritime safety in the global commons”, he added. It conducts anti-piracy patrols in the greater Gulf and serves as a regional counterbalance to Iran.
Iranian and US forces have clashed in the Gulf in the past, especially during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s after the 1979 Islamic revolution. Rouhani said Iran would not accept any curbs on its missile program.
To protect its considerable interests there, the United States deployed warships to the area to defend USA vessels in April after Iran seized a cargo ship owned by the Danish company Maersk that was traversing the strait.
Tensions have persisted in the strait even into this year.
The navy of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps has long focused on what it calls “asymmetric warfare” in the Strait of Hormuz, a combination of fast boats and missiles to challenge the larger vessels of adversaries. According to The Wall Street Journal, Iranian officials have warned new sanctions would be seen as a violation of the nuclear agreement.
In October, Iran announced the tests of long-range Emad missile which could be guided and controlled until hitting the target with high precision.
The Obama administration is said to be preparing new sanctions in an attempt to cripple Iran’s ballistic missile program, following an incident in the Gulf last week in which Iran fired a missile dangerously close to a USA warship. Iran has always denied seeking nuclear arms.

Earlier Thursday, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani denounced the possible new USA penalties, calling them “hostile and illegal interventions” that justified a response.
