Iranian Revolutionary Guards launched rockets near the USA aircraft-carrier Harry S. Truman and other warships as they were entering the Gulf on Saturday, giving only brief notice in a “highly provocative” act, a United States military spokesman said on Tuesday.
The purported incident comes five months after Iran and world powers led by the United States agreed a landmark deal – yet to be finally implemented – to limit the Islamic republic s nuclear programme in exchange for lifting economic sanctions.
Diplomats have held out hope that the deal over Iran’s disputed nuclear programme could ease decades of mistrust and reduce tensions in the Middle East.
“Firing weapons so close to passing coalition ships and commercial traffic within an internationally recognized maritime traffic lane is unsafe, unprofessional and inconsistent with global maritime law”, he said.
The U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet is based in nearby Bahrain, on the southern coast of the Gulf.
The firing came just 23 minutes after Iranian authorities gave naval traffic in the area notice, said Navy Commander Kyle Raines, spokesman for US Central Command, according to Reuters. The development seems to indicate that the historic arrangement between the USA and Iran appears to be on the right track.
“Apparently, the USA government … is considering adding new individuals and institutions to the list of its previous oppressive sanctions”, Rouhani said in the letter. While heralded by moderates in Iran, hard-liners have criticized the deal. It conducts anti-piracy patrols in the greater Gulf and serves as a regional counterbalance to Iran.
“The Guard’s Navy had no drills in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz and didn’t fire missiles or rockets during the past week and the time claimed by the Americans”, Sharif said in comments posted on the Guard’s website.

In October, Iran announced the tests of long-range Emad missile which could be guided and controlled until hitting the target with high precision.
Then, on April 24, 2015 during a nighttime outbound Strait of Hormuz transit, the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group observed Iranian small boats launching 11 unguided rockets from a position approximately five nautical miles from the carrier.
