Four American-Iranians in Iran and seven Iranians in the USA were also freed in a prisoner swap deal on the day sanctions were lifted.
Americans freed from Iran are arriving in Germany to be reunited with their families.
“As previously announced, the Islamic Republic of Iran… responds with determination to such propaganda by accelerating its legal ballistic missile program and boosting defense capabilities”, Ansari said. These sanctions and the new ones will continue to be enforced vigorously.
Some congressional officials briefed on the arrangement believe the negotiations demonstrate the ability of the Iranian regime to put pressure on the Obama administration.
On Sunday, the U.S. Department of Treasury released a statement imposing sanctions on 11 companies and individuals over involvement in Iranian ballistic missile testing.
Obama’s decision came after the IAEA confirmed Iran’s compliance of the historic nuclear deal, known as JCPOA, reached last summer. “This showed that those who used to say, “do not believe” were mistaken”, he said, stressing the deal would now make it easier for Iranian businesses to operate after years of being frozen out of the worldwide financial system.

Speaking in Vienna, US Secretary of State John Kerry, who had held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, said the world is “safer because the threat of the nuclear weapon has been reduced”. “Iran has a nuclear program that in 10 years will be a nuclear weapons program, thanks to Barack Obama, and Iran has a ballistic missile program that is a danger not just to its neighbors and to Europe but also to the United States”.
“And we are going to remain vigilant about it. We’re not going to waver in the defense of our security or that of our allies and partners”, he said.

“Engaging directly with the Iranian government to sustain basis for the first time in decades has created a unique opportunity, a window, to try to resolve important issues”, Obama said. “And it reflects our willingness to engage with Iran to advance our mutual interests, even as we ensure the national security of the United States”.
