‘Iran did not allocate military base to Russia’: Tehran

Syrian troops repelled a rebel advance near Aleppo on Monday, forcing opposition forces to retreat from positions they seized a day earlier as heavy fighting continued in the country’s largest city.

Reformist lawmaker Mahmud Sadeghi said on August 18 that 20 of his colleagues had written a letter to Larijani asking him for a closed session with relevant authorities to discuss the decision to allow Russian Federation use the Iranian air base.

Lavrov’s response comes after US State Department spokesperson Mark Toner, on Tuesday said that Russian Federation could be violating United Nations security resolution 2231, which was passed as a part of the Iran nuclear deal in July 2015.

But Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov denied that the Russian move breached the resolution.

“Discussion of the situation in Syria continued with a focus on the situation in Aleppo, where government forces are conducting a large-scale humanitarian operation with Russian support”, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on the Kerry-Lavrov phone call.

The resolution governs some military interactions between Iran and other countries, including the supply, sale or transfer of military technologies or the provision of training or financial assistance related to the acquisition of new technologies.

Defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov suggested that Washington needed to brush up on the specifics of the resolution. “It’s more complex than that”, Toner told a news briefing.

“It has gradations, if you will, on what you can or cannot do with regard to providing or giving Iran offensive capabilities”, he said.

“‘We’ve concluded a nuclear deal with the West, but we’re still not seeing the benefits, the fruits of the sanctions relief, ‘” Vatanka speculates about Iran’s possible thought process, putting himself figuratively in Tehran’s shoes.

“The Russian air force uses these fighter jets with Iran’s approval in order to take part in the counter-terrorism operation”.

“The fact that we cooperate with Russian Federation as our ally on regional issues, such as Syria, does not mean that we have provided Russian Federation with a military base”, Larijani added. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. Today (Thursday), the Russian Defense Ministry released the first footage of the bombers operating in the Deir ez-Zor area in Eastern Syria.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Tuesday Russian warplanes have taken off from a base in Iran and in Russia to target Islamic State fighters in Syria.

The U.S. also has airlifted tons of weaponry to opposition groups in northern Syria.

“We believe that we have the authorization, the legal authority rather, to use military force against ISIL in Iraq and in Syria”, he told reporters, using a different name for ISIS.

Former Iranian foreign minister and adviser to Supreme leader Ali Khamenei Ali Akbar Velayati said that the current military cooperation between Iran and Russian Federation falls under the new Iranian vision of the East.

The two nations operate in close proximity, and the United States expects the deal will include a grounding of Assad’s air force in exchange for providing more information to the Russians about U.S. missions. “We continue to pursue that”.
