Iran-EU relations at ‘determining stage’ after landmark nuclear deal

The visit of Martin Schulz, president of the European parliament, has prepared the proper ground for enhancement of ties after the July nuclear deal between Iran and the world powers, said Ali Larijani, Iran’s parliament speaker, at a joint press conference. He said on his ministry’s website: “In order to boost national production, it is necessary…to stop entry of American consumer goods and to prohibit products that symbolize the presence of the United States in the country”.

“Mr. Schulz, as a prominent politician, can closely examine issues with Iran”, stressed Parliament speaker expressing hope that the EP chief’s short visit to Iran will bring about great achievements for Iran and Europe.

He is also scheduled to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani during his stay in Iran as well.

He said Iran and the European Union, having seen the distance between them grow in the past, now have an opportunity to grow closer to one another.

“Furthermore, various regional areas demand cooperation on the part of the two sides”, noted Larijabi adding that, “good talks have been conducted on development of cooperation particularly on regional issues like terrorism as well as the current crises”.

Schulz was in Tehran on a one-day visit at the invitation of the Iranian parliament, the first of a head of the European Parliament to the country.

Iran has always claimed, however, its nuclear program was for peaceful purposes.

The European Union last month announced it had adopted the legal framework to lift its sanctions against Iran, once Tehran has curbed its nuclear activities.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is an element of stability in a region full of instability”, Schulz said.

The European Parliament is the directly elected parliamentary institution of the EU, which along with the European Commission and the EU Council, exercises the legislative function of the 28-nation bloc.
