On Saturday, Obama signed an executive order to lift sanctions on Iran after global inspectors concluded that Iran has dismantled large parts of its nuclear programme as promised.
“We have a rare chance to pursue a new path, a different, better future that delivers progress for both our peoples and the wider world”, said Obama.
The new sanctions announced Sunday target companies in Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates as well as six Iranian individuals and one Chinese citizen. “We’ve achieved this historic progress through diplomacy without resorting to another war in the Middle East”, the president said in a rare Sunday public statement.

Kerry said US penalties against Iran and other nations have been “used judiciously and effectively” and will continue to be used in the future. We are committed to continuing our work in an impartial, factual and non-political way.
Khamenei’s remark about American politicians comes after many Republican presidential candidates criticized the Obama administration’s negotiation with Iran this past weekend, which resulted in the return of five American prisoners.
“We went through a period of time while they were located and ultimately reunited with Jason, and now all is well that ends well”.
The Treasury said three of the sanctioned Iranian officials have had close ties with the North.
Mr Amano met the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation, Ali Akbar Salehi, and was to hold talks with President Hassan Rouhani to discuss monitoring and verifying Iran’s commitments under the agreement.
U.S. media said Washington would either pardon or drop charges against seven Iranians in exchange for the Americans.
