Iran’s Supreme Leader says negotiations with the U.S. are banned

“Among the schemes [orchestrated] by the enemy’s political and cultural armies are to undermine religious and political beliefs and seek to draw in active and influential youth at different levels”, said the Leader in a meeting with staff members of the Marytrs Congress of the southwestern Iranian province of Char-Mahal-Bakhtiari.

Ayatollah Khamenei further said the enemies had planned to make the Persian Gulf region insecure for Iran, but the naval forces of the IRGC made the plot backfire and the waters “became insecure for the enemies themselves”.

Khamenei added, “Negotiations between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran means penetration”.

The statements mark a sharp reversal after Iranian president Hassan Rouhani said last week his country was willing to talk with the USA about managing the crisis in Syria. “Even during the nuclear negotiations they tried to harm our national interests”.

Mr. Khamenei didn’t indicate whether the ban on talks with the US would affect implementation of the nuclear deal.

The agreement, which curbs Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for crippling sanctions being lifted, was welcomed by Iranians who are keen to see their living standards improve and better relations with the rest of the world.

In his address to Revolutionary Guards Navy commanders, Khamenei said talks with the United States brought only disadvantages to Iran.

Iranian state media carried his comments.
