Iran says Russia delivers first part of S-300 air defence system

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia-Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour has said that there are no arm sanctions against Iran, ILNA news agency reported. Iran filed a complaint against Russian Federation at the International Court of Arbitration in 2010 as Moscow suspended the delivery of the system under the $800 million-deal due to the international sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear program.

Under the previous contract signed in 2007, Russian Federation was required to provide Iran with at least five S-300 defense system batteries.S-300 (NATO reporting name SA-10 Grumble) is a missile defense system created to fire surface-to-air missiles at aerial targets such as helicopters, warplanes and cruise or ballistic missiles.

“We had already announced that despite several changes in the time of delivery, the deal is on its path of implementation and today I should announce that the first part of this equipment has arrived in Iran and delivery of other parts will continue”, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jaberi Ansari said, according to Mehr news agency.

The S-300 surface-to-air system is one of the most advanced in the world. The contract was renewed previous year, after Iran and six world powers signed an agreement on the country’s nuclear program.

In April 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the ban as Iran withdrew a lawsuit against Russia over the cancellation.

The Israeli Air Force has trained for a scenario in which it would have to carry out strikes in Syria or Iran on facilities defended by the Russian-made S-300 air defense system.
