Iran watchdog slates next presidential election for May 2017

Earlier, the country’s Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said the ministry will start preparations for Iran’s 2017 presidential elections in early fall.

Wednesday’s report says the Guardian Council set May 19 for the balloting, with a possible runoff a week later.

Iran’s Guardian Council announced Wednesday that next year’s presidential election will take place on May 19 with embattled incumbent Hassan Rouhani expected to run for a second term.

The 64-year-old Rouhani officially sworn in as Iran’s president August 2013, promising moderation.

Iranian officials have said that the election would be held earlier than usual so as not to coincide with the holy month of Ramadan.
