Zarif went on to add, “since opposing Arrogance is a significant feature of our Islamic Revolution and Iran has been sanctioned by the United States for over three decades, we understand Cuba’s situation and will stand by its nation and government”. He will then visit Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia and Venezuela in South America to confer with respective officials on expanding political and economic relations.
The Iranian diplomat claimed that Zarif’s trip would help bring economic cooperation with Latin America to “a whole new level”.
“Certain regional states have also joined the Zionist regime and display a wrong image of Iran in line with Iranophobia plots”, he added, in an apparent reference to Israel’s strengthening ties with a growing number of Latin American countries.
Turning to the issue of the relations between Iran and Cuba – his first destination on the Latin American tour – the Iranian foreign minister said Iran stands with the Cuban government and nation.
He also praised the biotechnological, scientific and medicinal cooperation between Iran and Cuba, expressing hope that interaction between the Iranian private sector and Cuba would further flourish in technical and engineering arenas.
