Thousands of Iranians burned the American flag and chanted slogans as they marked the anniversary of the seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran by militant students 36 years ago.

The landmark pact eases economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for greater restrictions on its nuclear energy capabilities.

“A lot of senior politicians and senior policymakers inside of Iran do not understand the dynamics of USA domestic politics and the US public”, Bazoobandi said.

“Your “Death to America” slogan, and the cries by the Iranian nation, have strong logical support behind them”, he told Iranian students in Tehran, according to The Associated Press. He stressed that Iran would never see the U.S. as a friend, because Washington would “grab the opportunity to sting and poison [the] Iranian nation with its venom”.

Other routes exist, such as licensing workarounds and direct trade for goods not covered by US sanctions, which result in American products ending up in the Iranian market.

“This slogan that is chanted is not a slogan against the American people”.

Iran’s parliament voted earlier this week to continue supporting “Death to America” rallies held across the country each Friday.

The supreme leader of Iran remarked that the “Death to America” slogan is eternal, though he clarified by saying that he was referring to America’s policies, rather than the people.

Major General Hassan Firuzabadi, who serves as the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, has said Iran will consider placing limits on the distances its missiles can travel, as mentioned in the recently signed nuclear agreement.

Of note, there have been other incidents similar to Khazaee’s case across the world, in particular in south east Asia and also in a few Western countries in which Iranian citizens have been arrested due to alleged violations of sanctions against Iran, Qashqavi said.

“But… the policies of the United States have been against the national interests of Iranian people (so) it’s understandable that people will demonstrate sensitivity to this issue”, he said. Later, out-of-favor Iranian revolutionaries also were at the receiving end of similar chants.

It seems unlikely that Khamenei’s latest explanation will change any minds in the United States. “We can not forget the past, but at the same time our gaze must be towards the future”, Rouhani told Kroft.
