The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically vital passage area for military and commercial shipping as it provides an entry point into the Arabian Gulf; the narrow waterway is heavily trafficked by oil shipments and commercial boats.

Saudi execution risks fueling sectarian tensions
Many of those executed had links to al-Qaeda and played a role in a string of deadly bombings throughout Saudi Arabia since 2003. But Saturday’s execution of top cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr drew calls in Iraq for the Saudi embassy to remain shuttered.

NBC News first reported news of the missile test.

According to the USA, the Iranian ships were conducting a live-fire exercise within about 1400 kilometers from the Harry Truman aircraft carrier.

Stephens said that Iranian forces suddenly announced a “live-fire exercise” Saturday before firing the rockets 23 minutes later, from within internationally recognized maritime traffic lanes and within the territorial waters of Oman, he said.

“The publication of such false news under the current conditions is more of a psychological warfare and questionable”, Sharif said.

Iranian state television aired in October unprecedented footage of such an underground missile base.
