Iraq Forces Take Ramadi From Islamic State In Landmark Victory
Iraqi forces in Ramadi have taken control of the city’s government complex from the group calling itself Islamic State, or ISIL.

The Iraqi troops had struggled to make gains against the militant group in the city in recent days, after launching a major offensive last week to retake Ramadi, as ISIS militants fiercely battled against them.
The soldiers were reportedly within 300 metres of the provincial government headquarters by this morning, Sabah al-Numani, a spokesman for the counter-terrorism force that is leading the fight on the government side, said.
Ramadi has strategic importance: Anbar province is the heartland of Iraq’s Sunni Muslim population and the city is close to Baghdad. Officials said it would be handed over to the local police and to a Sunni tribal force.
The extremists control large swaths of land in western and northern Iraq and in neighboring Syria. “The most important thing is to secure it (Ramadi) because Daesh can bounce back”, he said in an interview in Baghdad.
The former government headquarters in Ramadi was the epicentre of the fighting but Iraqi forces did not rush in when IS pulled out because the entire area was rigged.
Ali Dawood, the head of the neighbouring Khaldiya council, said ISIL fighters used civilians as human shields to slip out of the government complex.
Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool initially announced that Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, had been “fully liberated”.
The mainly Sunni Arab city, about 90km west of Baghdad, fell to IS in May, and was seen as an embarrassing defeat for the army.
Militants took over Ramadi in May.
He added that the US-led coalition has provided steadfast support to the Iraqi government, conducting more than 630 air strikes, training security forces, and providing both advice and specialised engineering equipment to clear bombs and booby traps.

A coalition airstrike left ISIS positions blanketed in thick smoke in Ramadi on Friday.

Regaining control there would deprive ISIS of a major source of funding and influence.
