Iraq PM – 2016 Will Be The Year Of Victory Over ISIL
Iraqi forces on Monday raised the national flag above the main government complex in Ramadi.

But there were still pockets of ISIL resistance in and around the city, the army said.
U.S. Army Colonel Steve Warren, spokesman for the worldwide coalition backing Baghdad, said casualties to Iraqi forces during the battle were in the low double digits.
“What we saw in terms of the combination of airstrikes and intelligence support and then forces on the ground, it has worked very, very well”, he said.
Iraqi soldiers successfully reclaimed key points in Ramadi City. In addition to several other reported executions, a religious leader was killed in western Mosul for refusing to pledge allegiance to the militants.
Iraqi troops will “need days” to get to the city’s central government complex, said al-Mahlawi, adding that the troops were about half a mile from the complex on Sunday. Many of its majority-Sunni residents fled the ISIS occupation and the fighting.
Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on Wednesday ordered the immediate formation of a high-level committee including the Anbar governor and senior federal government officials to stabilise and rebuild Ramadi. The operation to recapture Ramadi began in early November.
ISIS forces took control of Fallujah at the beginning of 2014 and formally seized control of Ramadi in May of this year.
Nineveh is home to Iraq’s second city of Mosul, from which IS supremo Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed his “caliphate” straddling Iraq and Syria more than a year and a half ago.
“This great victory has broken the back of Daesh and represents a launchpad for the liberation of Nineveh”, Salim al-Juburi said in a statement. But the presence of Iranian Shia Muslim fighters in Iraq’s Sunni heartlands only served to exacerbate sectarian tensions, especially when the Iranian-backed fighters were accused of carrying out reprisals against captured Sunni fighters. Distrust of the Shiite-led government runs deep in the sprawling Anbar province, which is overwhelmingly Sunni.
The U.S. and its allies have also used airstrikes to attack ISIS and have targeted the group’s finances, which rely on oil sales and other measures. But the Sahwas later fell out with the central government, which contributed to the IS group’s resurgence.
