Newly released helmet-cam footage shows a raid executed October. 22 by American special operators and Kurdish Peshmerga fighters in northern Iraq on an Islamic State facility. His death has raised questions about the nature of US involvement in the fight against ISIS.

“On behalf of Kurdistan Regional Government and Kurdish people, I express my condolences to the family and friends of the fearless soldier, and I wish speedy recovery for the wounded Peshmerga”, Barzani said in a statement.

Part of the video unveiled a room where an ISIS flag is pinned to the wall and furniture. The rescued hostages are then frisked for weapons & led away.

The person wearing the body camera empties the freed men’s shirt pockets and pats them down before hurriedly moving the men farther down the hallway. “We got more coming”. Wheeler was shot inside the compound, badly injured and flown to Irbil, where he died, according to the official.

Cook said: “Kurdish regional authorities requested American assistance to rescue hostages held by Daesh (ISIS), we agreed to provide helicopters to transport Kurdish forces”.

CNN reports that USA officials made the decision quickly because time was “running out” for the hostages.
