The Iraq army on Sunday announced the defeat of Islamic State fighters in Ramadi, a provincial capital west of Baghdad.

According to The Guardian, the progress in the bottom offensive launched final week has been sluggish with the militants entrenched in a metropolis that is still residence to hundreds of civilians trapped in the midst of the battle.
Ramadi, an important gain that could signal ISIS’ imminent exit from the key city in Iraq.
The US-led coalition, which was heavily involved in supporting Iraqi forces in Ramadi, also congratulated them on the success of an operation that began soon after they lost the city in May.
Al-Mahlawi said he could neither confirm nor deny media reports that ISIS fighters had pulled out of the government complex by nightfall Sunday.
The fighting over the past two days had been concentrated around the Government complex, whose recapture had become synonymous with victory in the battle for Ramadi.
“The government compound is under our full control”, Ibrahim said.
After overrunning Ramadi, ISIS destroyed all the bridges around the city.
“This great victory has broken the back of Daesh and represents a launchpad for the liberation of Nineveh”, Mr Salim al-Juburi said in a statement. COMPLETE CONTROL Ramadi was the first major city recaptured by the army itself, without relying on the militias, who were kept off the battlefield to avoid sectarian tension with the mainly Sunni population.
People waving Iraqi flags celebrated the Ramadi victory in several cities, including Baghdad and the holy Shiite city of Karbala.
Brig. Gen. Hamid al-Fatlawi, commander of the Iraqi army’s 8th division, said that Iraqi forces had seen limited direct combat around the complex, but that the Islamic State had used suicide bombers and vehicle bombs to try to fend off the assault before its militants fled.
ISIS fighters were vastly outnumbered by Iraqi soldiers when they pushed into the city in May, leading U.S. Defence Secretary Ash Carter to declare Iraq’s forces lacked “the will to fight”. “It will take years to return life to the city”. The U.S. tried to implement a similar strategy against ISIS as it did against insurgents in 2007 with the “Sunni Awakening”, and enlisted local tribal leaders to lead the fight against the Sunni militant group using American weapons.
