Iraqi forces raise their flag over Ramadi government complex
Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Monday that Islamic State would be defeated in 2016 with the army planning to move on Mosul.

“We can commend, rather, the government of Iraq and the fearless Iraqi forces that have displayed such tremendous perseverance as well as courage in the fight to return Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, back to the Iraqi people”.
On Tuesday, Abadi toured Ramadi, kicking off the visit by meeting security and provincial officials for the latest updates.
Ramadi fell to ISIS in May, marking a major setback for Iraqi forces and the U.S.-led campaign.
As significant – and symbolic – as the action was, Iraqi military officials said ISIL fighters were still holed up in pockets of the city.
First, though, the government will have to fix the damage and restore services in Ramadi to lure residents back, and keep them loyal so ISIS remains on the run.
Iraqi military commander Brig. “We do not want for the security forces to advance because if they do so there will be losses”, he said, “so we are trying to remove all the IEDs and explosives before entering the go vernmental compound”. The Iraqi security troops have raised the Iraqi flag over the governmental buildings.
Iraqi government forces, along with pro-government militias and Kurdish Peshmerga forces, are now seeking to retake Daesh-held areas with air support from the U.S.-led coalition.
Soldiers were shown on state television yesterday publicly slaughtering a sheep in an act of celebration.
Mosul, northern Iraq’s main city, is by far the largest population centre in the self-proclaimed caliphate ISIL rules in Iraq and Syria after going on the offensive in June 2014.
Sabah Noori, a spokesman for the Iraqi special forces, confirmed that counterterrorism forces had taken control of the complex.
In a statement, Maliki, a Shiite himself, said the army, anti-terrorism squad, and the Iraqi air force dislodged ISIS in Ramadi, Rudaw reports.
Gen. Hadi Rzaig, head of the Anbar police force. The United States military stands ready to support our Iraqi partners and the rest of the worldwide coalition as we build on today’s progress and continue to strike ISIL on multiple fronts until we achieve their inevitable defeat. The capture of Ramadi would be a major victory for Iraqi troops, but would also test the government’s ability to bridge the country’s sectarian divide.

French President François Hollande called the liberation of Ramadi the “most important victory yet” in the fight against the jihadists.
