Iraqi Forces Retake Key City of Ramadi From Islamic State
The prime minister congratulated the security forces on their recapture late Sunday of Ramadi, which they had lost in May following a devastating jihadist onslaught. Soldiers could be seen slaughtering sheep in celebration near heavily damaged buildings.

The United States on Monday welcomed the Iraqi forces’ victory over the Islamic State (IS) group in the city of Ramadi. The success marks the first major victory for Iraq’s military over the militants, although some fighting is expected to continue in the days to come.

Formed in 2013 from an affiliate of al-Qaeda and known by other names including ISIS, ISIL and Daesh, garnered global headlines for its conquest of territory in Syria and Iraq. It has declared a caliphate in the areas under its control and imposed a harsh and violent interpretation of Islamic law.
He said it was now important for the Iraqi government to maintain the peace in Ramadi, prevent the return of IS, and to help Ramadi’s citizens to return to the city.
