The United States on Monday welcomed the Iraqi forces’ victory over the Islamic State (IS) group in the city of Ramadi. The success marks the first major victory for Iraq’s military over the militants, although some fighting is expected to continue in the days to come.

Its rise was aided by the swift collapse of the Iraqi army, which abandoned city after city, leaving fleets of armoured vehicles and other American weapons in the fighters’ hands.

One of the main challenges of the conflict since then has been rebuilding the Iraqi army into a force capable of capturing and holding territory.

Ramadi, capital of mainly Sunni Muslim Anbar province in the Euphrates River valley west of Baghdad, had been Daesh’s biggest prize of 2015, seized in May. Authorities gave no immediate death toll from the battle for the city. “We are trying to remove all the IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) and explosives before entering the governmental compound”, he said.

Noting the Shiite-majority Iraqi military, he said the Sunni population in Ramadi might perceive the troops as worse than ISIS.

But British military operations still mostly focused their attention in neighbouring Iraq.

Formed in 2013 from an affiliate of al-Qaeda and known by other names including ISIS, ISIL and Daesh, garnered global headlines for its conquest of territory in Syria and Iraq. It has declared a caliphate in the areas under its control and imposed a harsh and violent interpretation of Islamic law.

He said it was now important for the Iraqi government to maintain the peace in Ramadi, prevent the return of IS, and to help Ramadi’s citizens to return to the city.
