Iraqi, Lebanese militias deploy to Syria’s Aleppo
Most have been suffered by the rebel side, which has been bombarded by Russian air strikes.

Rebel units on Saturday pushed northeast into the Ramussa district where they linked up with other insurgents who had fought from inside the city.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels took control of the Armament School and large parts of an artillery base in the southwestern parts of Aleppo. The advance followed a rare show of unity among the opposition, which began a campaign a week ago involving thousands of fighters working to break the siege of Aleppo.
However the rebels have been unable to secure exit corridors for people trapped in besieged areas, due to intensive Russian and Syrian regime airstrikes on the area, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
“Not a single civilian has left the eastern districts because the road is too unsafe and not secured”, he said.
US-backed “moderate” rebels have cast off all pretence of distancing themselves from jihadi extremists by allying openly with the LCF in a so-called Army of Conquest Alliance.
Meanwhile, the rebel coalition said it would double the number of fighters to launch a new offensive and retake the whole city.
But the road, which passes through southern edges of the city, remains too unsafe for civilians to use, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Sunday.
The group, formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra, last month distanced itself from parent organisation al-Qaeda in a move meant to bring it closer with other rebels.
“The mosaic of different religious communities and ethnic groups has been shattered as the conflict, which initially started as a broad-based, non-violent, pro-democracy movement has descended into sectarian fighting which has divided Syrians from one another”, he said. The militants have carried out a counter attack in this area using two explosives-laden cars, but the Syrian forces have repelled the attack destroying three tanks and three infantry fighting vehicles.
Jets believed to be Russian intensified their bombing of rebel-held Aleppo countryside and also hit opposition held Idlib city in north western Syria, rebels said.
After days of ferocious fighting in what it has named “The Great Battle for Aleppo”, the Islamist-led rebel coalition known as Jaysh al Fateh broke through government lines in southwest Aleppo Saturday, capturing the strategic district of Ramouseh.
Earlier on Sunday, users shared images and videos allegedly showing the first convoy to enter Aleppo with food supplies.
The alliance’s victory created a heavily contested corridor between previously encircled opposition-held territory in the east of the city and the lands controlled by their allies to the west. A source in Damascus confirmed that the road to western Aleppo was closed.
The fight for Aleppo is among the fiercest so far in Syria’s chaotic multi-front war, which has killed more than 280,000 people.
The United Nations and aid groups said conditions in the rebel-held east were concerning.

The rebel advance now puts the estimated 1.2 million people in government-held districts under opposition encirclement, he added.
