Ireland defeat Springboks in Cape Town

Lambie was carried from the field after being pole-axed by a tackle from Ireland flanker CJ Stander, who was red-carded for the offence, on Saturday.

South Africa-born Stander was sent off on his return to his homeland for knocking Boks flyhalf Pat Lambie unconscious with a flying charge-down attempt.

It certainly looked like it would take divine intervention from on high when CJ Stander saw red for turning his hip into the head of Pat Lambie in mid-air with nearly an hour left on the clock.

After two days of lengthy deliberation, World Rugby delivered the citing commissioner’s verdict on Stander.

The 14 men kept South Africa scoreless for most of the second half, and their lead was extended when Jackson scored a 68th minute penalty for a 13-23 lead.

Jackson even increased the lead to 10 points with a 68th-minute penalty, but the fly-half quickly went from hero to villain when his telegraphed pass near his own 22-metre line was intercepted by Du Toit for an easy run-in.

“It was very unsafe play by Stander and that is a red card”.

Coetzee said his players would be embarrassed by the video review as he praised Ireland’s work rate.

South Africa had a two-man advantage for the remainder of the opening 40, Robbie Henshaw sin-binned for a late and high tackle on Jantjies after the latter had provided the try assist.

Jackson was narrowly wide with a second drop-goal attempt, but added another penalty before some desperate defence denied Pietersen a try that would have given Jantjies the chance to break Ireland’s heart.

South Africa offered no excuses for their disappointing defeat against Ireland on Saturday with coach Allister Coetzee ordering his players to go and “fix it”.

“I do think it looked like a first performance together for them”.

“I made it clear we would definitely consider Morne as a replacement option because of his vast experience, and I would therefore not hesitate to draft him into the match-day squad”, explained Coetzee. It is the first step on the way to what Schmidt and the players hope will be a series win in the coming weeks.
