International Olympic Committee executive Patrick Hickey is arrested in Brazil for allegedly selling Rio 2016 tickets illegally.
Police said Patrick Hickey is accused of plotting with at least six others to illegally sell tickets for the Olympics.
Mr Hickey was elected head of the European Olympic Committees in 2006 and has been in charge of the Olympic Council of Ireland since 1989.
An International Olympic Committee source told Reuters the organisation was also still establishing the facts in the case.
He was apparently taken to hospital after falllng ill when confronted by local police.
Irish man Kevin Mallon, a director of THG Sports, which specialises in corporate and sports hospitality, has been in custody in Brazil since August 5 over the affair.
“He was arrested”, a spokesman confirmed.
THG does not have a permit to sell Irish Olympic tickets but an official company, Pro 10, said Mallon was working for them and did have a letter of accreditation.
Mr Hickey had previously denied any wrongdoing in the OCI’s role in securing or using an authorised ticket reseller for the games.
Brazilian media believe Mr Hickey’s arrest is related to that of fellow Irishman Kevin James Mallon on the day of the opening ceremony. “It is still early morning here so we are trying to gather some information and when we do that we will release a statement through our normal channels”.

On Sunday night, Hickey held a “fairly tense, fairly frank” meeting with Irish sports minister Shane Ross about the ticketing scandal, according to the Irish Times.
