Irish overcome slow start

UMass coach Mark Whipple wants the Minutemen to come out with more confidence than last season at Penn State, when he said they played “scared, frightened”.

Notre Dame football running back C.J. Prosise took the first-down carry midway through the second quarter and veered outside to the right.

Prosise got the Irish going early with a 57-yard touchdown run. Such long runs for scores would be a theme throughout the game for the Irish. The Fighting Irish defense stands to fare well this week when they face off against Massachusetts’s offense, which averages a paltry 18.5 points per game. He outran Minutemen defenders 70 yards to the goal line and finished with 133 total rushing yards for a personal high.

But they said seeing a game at Notre Dame, which is traditionally regarded as a pristine Division I program, was well worth it. Benson said they planned to walk around campus and visit the iconic “Touchdown Jesus” mural painted on the campus library. But Blake Lucas’ extra point was blocked, leaving the score 14-6. “(It) kind of turned the tide a little bit for us”.

Defensive back Matthias Farley is always ready to be the next man in for sixth-ranked Notre Dame. He became the first Notre Dame player with three straight 100-yard games since Darius Walker did it in 2005. The Demon Deacons are coming off of a game last weekend in which they lost their starting quarterback, John Wolford, to an ankle injury on the game’s first drive.

Skov has rushed for 188 yards and five touchdowns in three games.

Running back Marquis Young brought Massachusetts back with an 83-yard touchdown run as time expired in the first quarter. He can be the inspirational presence that the rest of the defense can look too and see in his eyes, we can succeed because to someone like Joe Schmidt, overcoming the odds and succeeding is exactly where he thrives. The Irish held Massachusetts to one yard on three plays, leading to Sanders’ punt return. Unfortunately he did have one run back for a score, but given he was kicking from the back of his own end zone it is hard to fault him for that; the coverage wasn’t exactly stellar either. The Minutemen will be the eighth first-time opponent the Irish have faced in six seasons under Brian Kelly. After that game, when full-time rushing duties were assigned to the jack-of-all-trades, the senior has run for 155, 198, and 149 yards respectively – with his 149-yard performance against UMass not fully doing his awesomeness justice. Then starter Tarean Folston was injured in Notre Dame’s season opener and he’s out for the season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Clemson get off to a slow start after a bye week. Both the play-calling and execution on defense is severely lacking, and something needs to change soon.

The Yellow Jackets were 0-for-7 on third down in the first half and gained only 117 yards. It’s pathetic and painful to watch. Notre Dame led 21-20 when Newsome pinned UMass at its 1.

Eventually, the Irish made adjustments to shut down the Minutemen attack in the blowout. We’ve got to go in there with the mindset to start fast like we did the first two games.

“It’s big time college football“. Sebastian was initially given a four-to-six-week timetable for his recovery. Caggiano was true again to make it 21-20 with 6:44 left in the half. I have never been Lucas’ biggest fan, however I publicly backed him last week saying that the PAT attempt against Temple could not be laid all at his feet; he is a very easy target. His older brother’s football career at Coastal Carolina was cut short because of injuries.
