He was also in charge of the influential umbrella group for Europe’s Olympic bodies.

Not content with the Michael O’Reilly scandal, ticket touting fiasco or boxing judges farce [of which Ireland were on the receiving end], there has been further Irish head-hanging after Friday night’s betting revelations.

The THG sports director was released on bail from Bangu Prison in the early hours of yesterday morning under strict conditions including an 8pm curfew.

It is alleged by Brazilian police, however, that Pro10 Sports Management, the Dublin-based company who were selected, were just a front operation to hide THG’s involvement.

The company said it had legitimate customers for its tickets and Mr Mallon was acting as a collection agent for them in Rio, meeting clients.

Police said at the time that they seized hundreds of tickets from Mallon which they suspect were offered for sale for thousands of dollars.

“We certainly are concerned about the fact that there are Irish citizens in Brazil in this sort of situation”.

‘The OCI can confirm that two Irish boxers at Rio 2016 were spoken to about inappropriate betting activity during the Games.

Separately, the OCI has appointed consultants Grant Thornton to carry out an independent review of its handling of ticketing arrangements for the Rio games.

The review is due to conclude by Monday October 10.

Hickey’s lawyer in Dublin has not responded to a request for comment from Reuters.
