The Golden Globes TV categories this year had some… unexpected names.

Nominations list in television this year is dominated by streamers.

The nominations for the 2016 Golden Globe Awards were announced Thursday morning, and the film Carol tops the list with five nominations. The premium-cable network and its period-piece, European co-productions such as “The White Queen” and “Dancing on the Edge” have fared well at the Golden Globes in recent years.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which bestows the Golden Globes, exhibited a lack of sentiment for AMC’s “Mad Men“, which completed its stellar run last season.

The Golden Globe ceremony, often a raucous affair, will be held January 10 with Ricky Gervais as host.

Timothy Gray, awards editor at industry magazine Variety, said the nominations reflected the cross-section of films in the running for this year’s prizes. Narcos earned a nomination for Best Television Series in the Drama category, while Orange is the New Black won a nomination for the same in the Comedy category.

If that is the case, Todd Haynes’ “Carol”, about two women in love in 1950’s NY, is Oscar bound in many categories.

Ronan will go head to head with American actress Brie Larson, also nominated in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture category for her harrowing performance in “Room”.

Snubbed by the HFPA were performances by older actors, including the brilliant star turns by Blythe Danner for “I’ll See You in My Dreams” and Charlotte Rampling for “45 Years”.

For drama series, the HFPA nominated three newcomers: Fox’s smash hit soap opera “Empire“, USA’s paranoid thriller “Mr. Robot”, and Starz’s time-travel adventure “Outlander”. The actresses, both in their 70’s, represent an age group whose stories are rarely told in films, and the oversight stings.

Acting categories were also ripe with digital talent.

Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” also got left out in the cold.

SURPRISE: Mark Ruffalo, “Infinitely Polar Bear” This Sundance dramedy, where Ruffalo plays a father battling bipolar disorder, barely registered at the box office. This has been a bad week for Keaton, who also didn’t receive a SAG nomination, which casts doubt on the early season prediction that the “Batman”/”Birdman” star would finally win an Oscar.

Coming out on top is the Todd Haynes-directed film Carol starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, which was nominated for Best Motion Picture Drama, and Best Original Score – Motion Picture while Todd is up for Best Director.

The nominees for best actress in a comedy or musical are Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Melissa McCarthy (Spy), Amy Schumer (Trainwreck), Lily Tomlin (Grandma), and Maggie Smith (The Lady in the Van).

The nominees for best motion picture drama are Spotlight, The Revenant, Carol, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Room.

Just like Rocky Balboa, Sylvester Stallone was considered a bit of an underdog in the awards race. Its nominations for best picture drama (over “Brooklyn”) and best director for George Miller shows that the Warner Bros. summer tentpole has staying power.
