Ronana spoke with Brooklyn director John Crowley and her friend/co-star in the film Eileen O’Higgins right after the nominations were announced and said it was then that the emotions took over.
Ronan, now a two-time nominee, described Brooklyn as the most personal and toughest movie she had made in her relatively short career.
These nominations mark a wonderful start to 2016, a year in which I hope the Irish film industry will continue to go from strength to strength, boosting the economy, creating jobs, and developing tourism. It is a testament to everyone who gave so much of themselves to make this film happen.
Director Benjamin Cleary was also nominated for his live-action short film Stutterer.
And incredible day for the Irish actress..
Saoirse Ronan has said her best actress Oscar nomination has been a dream.
James Hickey, Chief Executive Bord Scannán hÉireann/the Irish Film Board said: “What a triumph for Irish film”.
“May I say, I am particularly proud to be nominated as a supporting actor, as I find the level of supporting acting in films these days utterly convincing and very often extremely moving, even the smallest parts”.
With a clatter of nominations confirmed, it is a moment to savour for the Irish Film industry.
Áine Moriarty, Chief Executive Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) said, What fantastic achievements for these superb Irish filmmakers and Oscar nominees, in being recognised amongst the best in the world.
“We have a tiny industry here in Ireland”.
Following are reactions from some of the nominees, who were chosen by voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The 88th Oscars will be hosted by comedian Chris Rock and takes place on February 28.
