Irving’s late shooting leads Cavaliers past Suns 101-97
PHOENIX – Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving will return to the lineup Monday to face the Phoenix Suns and then not play the second night of Cleveland’s back-to-back Tuesday in Denver in what he says he hopes will be the last time he sits out all season.

Portland led 34-12 after one quarter and was never threatened, as the Cavs managed a season-low for points and Cleveland star LeBron James was held to 12 points, matching his season low.
Crabbe scored 21 of his 26 points in the first half to help the Blazers take a 63-34 lead into the halftime locker room.
He’ll match up primarily with Kevin Love, who’s trying to shake out of a funk as well – notching more than 13 points in just one of his last five outings and shooting 41 percent from the floor over that span. Despite Saturday’s loss, Love did shoot the ball well from long-distance in his return to the Pacific Northwest – going 4-for-7 from deep.
All this came with superstar Damian Lillard watching from behind the bench missing his third straight game due to injury in his left foot.
Although he’ll play tonight in Phoenix, Kyrie Irving won’t play tomorrow in Denver.
With or without Kyrie Irving, the Cleveland Cavaliers have been awful on offense over the past week.
Portland’s lead was 78-46 after a McCollum free throw midway through the third quarter.
“Ending this year not playing in the back-to-backs, it works for me as long as it’s on the positive track for whatever is best for my health and going into the New Year as healthy as I can be”, Irving said, acknowledging Saturday’s blowout loss to Portland in which he didn’t dress. Cleveland cut the deficit to 16 points early in the second after Matthew Dellavedova hit two 3-pointers during an 8-0 run. Defense optional – Sometimes shots don’t fall, especially on the second game of a back-to-back to begin a tough road trip. But they were outscored 34-9 the rest of the first quarter, trailing by 22 points at the end.
Kyrie Irving drives to the hoop for the Cleveland Cavaliers against the Phoenix Suns. We just got to figure it out.
“One of the things you love about the National Basketball Association, anything can happen”, Stotts said. But Portland countered with 11 consecutive points to take a 51-24 lead. 167 from 3-point range (5 for 30) against the Warriors.
NOTES: Portland is 8-3 against Cleveland since the start of the 2010-11 season….
Cavaliers: James passed Alex English for 17th place on the NBA’s career scoring list and surpassed Stephon Marbury for 22nd in career assists….
Mavericks 118, Bulls 111: J.J. Barea made a career-high seven 3-pointers and finished with 26 points in Dallas’ win. His previous high was 19….
On the season, the Portland Trail Blazers average 101.0 points, 45.9 rebounds and 20.6 assists per game. The only thing lacking for Phoenix is solid, consistent post play.
