While Straight Outta Compton dominates the American box office and stir up discussion of police brutality that helped launch a revolutionary music genre, we learn that there is a sequel to the smash hit movie in the works already.
Twentieth Century Fox’s “Hitman: Agent 47” debuted in fourth with $8.2 million, falling short of the $10 million to $16 million tracking estimates.
Despite the release of three new movies in wide release, Paramount Pictures’ Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation starring Tom Cruise, remained in second place with $11.7 million, down 32% as it has grossed $158 million domestically in its first month. The industry is expected to be down about 5% to 6% from the same weekend past year, according to film-tracking firm Rentrak. The R-rated film fell slightly short of expectations but made $10.6 million, enough to nab the No. 3 spot. It began with $8.5 million over the weekend internationally. U.N.C.L.E. brought in $7.4 million, dropping 45 percent in its second weekend, and its domestic total is now at $26.6 million.
Lionsgate’s stoner action-comedy “American Ultra”, starring Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg, also failed to spark much interest, opening with $5.5 million.
