Is Georgia GOP grooming Mark Richt to run for governor in 2018?

Mark Richt has many more job options on his plate than just college coaching opportunities.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, citing sources, Republicans are trying to recruit Richt to run for Georgia governor in 2018.

The former Georgia coach, who was sacked on Sunday after 15 seasons, said on his radio show Monday night that he’d been contacted by “about five” schools regarding their coaching vacancies. He also seems to have some of the requisite skills for the job – familiarity with some of the state administrators, experience dealing with the media, and experience delivering messages and public speeches.

“Coach Richt doesn’t seem to really enjoy politics, and I would be absolutely stunned if he ran for any political office”, Tim Echols said.

As for the bowl game, the school is giving Richt the prospect to nonetheless coach in that game, & he states he is “thankful for in that chance”. In 1988, Vince Dooley gave the idea of running for governor serious consideration.

Richt’s friends don’t expect him to venture into the world of politics any time soon. Nebraska’s Tom Osborne served three terms in Congress before losing a bid for governor in 2006 after leaving the coaching ranks.

If he’s done with coaching, Mark Richt could have a future in politics.
