CAIRO/NICE, France Islamic State claimed responsibility for the truck attack on the French city of Nice on Saturday as French police arrested three people there in connection with the carnage that claimed the lives of at least 84 people.
The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) said it had reviewed its travel advice for France, saying there was a heightened threat of terrorism there after the attack.
French authorities were still trying to determine whether the 31-year old Tunisian driver of the vehicle had acted alone or with accomplices, and whether his motives were connected to radical Islam. A former neighbour in Bouhlel’s hometown of Msaken, about 120 km (75 miles) south of Tunis, said he had left for France in 2005, after getting married, and had worked as a driver there. Not much is known about Bouhlel or if he had any official ties to groups, but police are investigating the attack as a terrorist incident. A truck driver reportedly drove into a crowd which had gathered to watch fireworks in commemoration of the day.
Before the man many are calling a hero did manage to make it onto the truck, several others tried to do the same, eyewitnesses have reported.
The attack killed 84 people and wounded 200.
The truck attack is exactly in line with jihadist calls to action, Molins said.
Tory said that tonight will be the third time that the Toronto sign has been lit red, white and blue in commemoration of a deadly attack in France.
“People went down like nine-pins”, Jacques, who runs Le Queenie restaurant on the seafront, told France Info radio. Eric Gaillard/ReutersPolice inspect the scene the following morning.
Along the route of the attack there are shrines and memorials to the victims – among the tributes are teddy bears and toys, a reminder of the fact that children were among the dead. “He would stare at the children a lot”, he added.
