IS militants drove out rebels from the localities of Tall Qrah, Tall Soussin, Kafar Qares and the base of Madrasat al-Mushat, he said.
Islamic State group fighters advanced Friday on Syria’s second city Aleppo despite 10 days of Russian air strikes that Moscow says are aimed at routing the jihadists.
The group has also managed to seize a former army base known as the Infantry Academy, which was under the administration of the rebels for two years.
Islamic State are now within 2 km (1 mile) of government-held territory on Aleppo’s northern edge, the closest they have been to the city.
The areas were seized from hard-line and mainstream rebel groups, including the ultra-conservative Ahrar al-Sham and the Levantine Front.
Senior Iranian officials have been in the country for several years.
The Russians “are no longer an indirect party to the conflict, they have a huge target on their backs”, Steven A. Cook, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, a USA think tank, wrote in a commentary.
Hamedani had been playing an “important role… reinforcing the front of ISIL resistance against the terrorists”, it added.
The Army of Conquest, which had made a string of advances against government troops in recent months, has come under attack from Russian warplanes.
Hamedani was killed by the Islamic State group on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Aleppo Thursday night, Iranian state media announced Friday.
Iranian lawmaker Esmail Kosari said Hamedani helped coordination between Syrian armed forces and the voluntary forces in their fight against the Islamic State (IS). But none of the agencies offered any further details.
According to the Observatory, 16 IS jihadists including three child soldiers were killed in the raids which hit “a training camp” on the southern edges of Raqa city.
Hamedani was a veteran of the 1980s war between Iran and Iraq.
Although the statement used the Arab acronym for the extremist group Islamic State to describe those responsible for Gen. Hamedani’s death, the circumstances of his demise weren’t disclosed.
Brigadier General Hossein Hamedani had been working as a military advisor for the Assad regime.
