According to the authorities, the deceased, 26, was a native of the town of Bhatkal, in the southwestern state of Karnataka, and headed Junud ul Khalifa e Hind (Army of the Indian Caliphate), a group formed a year ago to serve as a spearhead of the ISIS in the country.

His older brother Sultan Armar, who headed the ISIS branch in India, was killed also in Syria in March 2015. He had formed the AuT after developing differences with Bhatkal brothers-led Indian Mujahideen. He even arranged funds – through transfers and hawala transactions – for IS recruits here. “We have learnt about his death”. Sultan Armar, who headed AuT before his death, allegedly appeared in many videos (now blocked) with his face digitally masked, asking Indian Muslims to join AuT and wage a war in the name of jihad.

Armar had emerged as the common link among prospective jihadists across the country after several youth were arrested by the National Investigation Agency recently.
