Supermarket giant Morrisons is set to close two stores in the North East as part of plans to shut 11 struggling stores.

MORRISONS in Tyldesley is to close as part of a supermarket turnaround.

Hundreds of staff around the region had been forced to wait days to hear if their branch was among the 11 which Morrisons said last week would be closed.

Last week it was revealed that the store in Burnham-on-Sea will be closing and now it has been confirmed the store in Clevedon will also be closing.

“This is a hard decision, but one which we cannot see any way through to make those stores viable”, he said.

The UK’s fourth-largest grocer reported a near 50 percent slump in profits and said that it was facing a “long journey” to turn around its fortunes amid rising competition from German chains Lidl and Aldi.

“Since joining Morrisons, I have been struck by the passion and commitment of all our colleagues, and I want to thank them for their continued good work”.

Morrisons has already cut 10 supermarkets at a loss of 430 jobs and shrunk the size of its head office by 720 jobs.
