ISDH: First case of Zika virus confirmed in Indiana

The head of the country’s Olympic Committee, Kipchoge Keino, has said the country will not send a team to Rio if the virus, which is transmitted by infected mosquitos, reaches “epidemic levels”.

“For instance, despite last year’s outbreak of the Ebola virus, which like Zika is not susceptible to airborne transmission, the global airline industry achieved record financial results in 2015 amid growing passenger demand and sharply lower fuel costs”.

So far, health officials have confirmed at least seven known cases of Zika virus in the region.

Yes, Zika virus can be transmitted when the mosquito bites an infected person and then, subsequently, bites another person. The counties now under a public health emergency are Broward, Hillsborough, Lee, Miami-Dade, Osceloa, Santa Rosa and St. Johns. The mosquito behind the Zika virus seems to operate like a heat-driven missile of disease. Armstrong urged residents to help stop mosquito activity by draining “standing water weekly, no matter how seemingly small”. While the Texas case was not confirmed, the sexual transmission is possible, according to Kenneth Ratzan, MD, chief of infectious diseases at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, Fla.

“I’m not saying there’s zero risk, but I think we have to appraise the risk more reasonably”.

“We need the co-operation of everybody to achieve this via the public, local councils, state governments and health authorities”.

However, Zika was first discovered in East Africa, in Kenya’s neighbor Uganda.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was reporting 35 cases of Zika virus in 12 states and the District of Columbia prior to Ohio’s case. There are several factors that play into transmissibility, including environmental factors (how prevalent certain types of mosquitoes are present in your community), weather (seasonal peaks of mosquito populations), and host factors, of which we in Austin would be very susceptible since, essentially, no one is immune to Zika virus.

What Does the Virus Do?

Anyone who develops symptoms consistent with the disease – fever, rash, joint pain, red eyes, muscle pain and headaches – within 14 days of making a donation was asked to immediately notify the Red Cross so the blood can be quarantined.

Colombian officials reported Saturday three people have died after contracting the Zika virus. Severe complications from the virus that require hospitalization are rare, according to the CDC.

The research began after a huge rise in such birth defects a year ago in Brazil at the same time the virus took hold there. The syndrome is an immunological reaction that can also occur after other viral or bacterial infections.

“So there’s a great potential here for significant spread of this virus, and we’ve already seen that with a number of countries that have been involved”, MacFadden said. And hope the worldwide health organizations understand the urgency to get this outbreak under control.
