In the interview, al-Barnawi said Boko Haram was “still a force to be reckoned with” and that it had been receiving new recruits.
The publication by Al Naba did not mention the current status of Barnawi’s predecessor Abubakar Shekau, sparking long-standing debates over his fate.
“Boko Haram’s wanton violence has always been a concern for Isil”, he said.
It is unclear what happened to Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram’s previous leader.
Shehu said since Buhari assumed office on May 29, 2015, he had been fair, saying the claims that the present administration was targeting Christians and members of the opposition were without foundation.
St-Pierre said the message suggested Shekau was trying to retain his base of support within Boko Haram without compromising the commitment to IS. The splinter operates in north-eastern Nigeria and, unlike Boko Haram, does not attack Muslim civilians and does not force women and children to carry out suicide bombing missions.
It also says IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi did not respond to letters explaining that al-Barnawi is “an infidel” preaching “false creeds”.
Boko Haram last week ambushed a humanitarian convoy, killing three civilians including a United Nations employee and causing the suspension of United Nations aid to newly liberated but still unsafe areas of Nigeria’s northeast.
Shekau was still the head of the “West African wing”, said the masked speaker, likening Boko Haram to the Islamist insurgencies in Iraq, Libya and Syria.
Boko Haram has been pegged back by an aggressive fightback from the Nigerian military since January 2014, losing territory and its capacity to mount conventional attacks.
Over the weekend, Yakubu Dogara, speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives condemned the attack as barbaric and inhuman, according to the country’s Guardian news outlet.
He said, ” The leadership change of BHT as purportedly released recently doesnt in any way bother us as the group is almost dead in Nigeria and others within the Lake Chad nations.
