The source material for Ford’s forthcoming film is Austin Wright’s dark 1993 thriller Tony and Susan.
The film was up for sale at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, for which Focus Features paid a cool $20 million for the worldwide rights, one of the biggest the festivals has ever seen.
Given Ford’s pedigree as a writer and director, the project’s development has been closely followed as it’s already in the awards discussion for when it releases in 2016.
This will be Ford’s second foray into film direction, having debuted with A Single Man in 2009 for which Colin Firth received an Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
Described as a two-part story, the first half introduces Susan, who has graciously accepted a request from her former husband to review the manuscript of a book he has written-both awkward and intriguing, as their relationship ended nearly two decades earlier. While reading the novel, Morrow has to face truths about her own past.
We’ll continue to keep you abreast of any developments for Nocturnal Animals. As his ordinary life is violently set off course, Susan is forced to confront her own past.
Nocturnal Animals will be Fisher’s first project with Ford, and Michael Shannon, Kim Basinger and Armie Hammer are also down for roles in the film. He now has Isla Fisher joining the extensive roster.

In Nocturnal creatures, however, it seems this alleged resemblance will be put to good use, suggesting no end of creepy parallels between “real life” character Susan and Laura, the murdered wife of the novel she reads.
