One casualty of the fighting has been a senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, General Hossein Hamedani. Officials said that they have not received any information supporting such an incident.

It was not immediately clear whether the cruise missiles hit targets in the area of the Hama assault, though there are a few indications they did.

The base is located around 10 miles northeast of Aleppo city.

“Why didn’t America attack Daesh fighters during their attack?” asked Rami Abdurrahman, director of the Observatory.

French Rafale warplanes attacked an IS training camp in their stronghold of Raqqa overnight.

Russian Federation says its intervention is aimed at helping the Syrian government defeat the Islamic State group, but local activists and US officials say the strikes have also targeted Western-backed rebels and have had the effect of propping up the Assad government. It said the group seized the villages of Tal Qrah, Tal Sousin and Kfar Qares north of Aleppo city.

The general is the latest of a number of Iranian commanders to be killed in Syria.

Hamadani was a veteran of the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war and was made deputy chief commander of the elite forces in 2005.

Several senior Iranian Guards officers have also been killed in Syria since the start of the civil war.

The secretary told reporters that Russian Federation was backing the wrong horse in Syria and urged President Vladimir Putin to sign up to the United States programme of a future without Assad.

The White House declined to comment and State Department spokesman John Kirby said he could not confirm the missiles had crashed, while adding that the report pointed towards the need for procedures to prevent clashes with US planes targeting Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants in Syria.

The Observatory says Islamic State has no real presence in these areas.

The Anadolu Agency said Mr Leyla, 27, died in the attack in the town of Hreitan, in northern Aleppo province.

Leyla, who was from Aleppo, had trained as a computer technician. “They are trying to finish off the rebels”, he said.

Russian air strikes began last week and have mostly focused in areas of western Syria, where Assad has sought to shore up his control after losing swathes of the rest of the country to insurgents, including Islamic State (IS).
