In a statement issued in Arabic, the Islamic State (IS) claimed that it killed Cesare, SITE Intelligence Group said.

The Australian cricket team delayed its departure to Bangladesh for an October tour after its government said there was a potential security risk from militants.

Islamist extremism has been on the rise in Bangladesh, a largely poor nation of 160 million people, where authorities have banned fundamentalist groups blamed for a string of assassinations of secular writers.

The killing became a matter of concern after Islamic State, the radical Islamist militant group, reportedly claimed responsibility for the murder, a few hours after it occurred.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for gunning down an Italian citizen on the streets of Bangladesh – and threatens more attacks to come.

One of the witnesses, Sitara Begum, said she was terrified upon hearing the shots while she was sitting on the road at an intersection near the scene of the attack.

Regarding the IS claim, Muntasirul Islam, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told Xinhua that “We are looking into the statement”.

“The Islamic Start (IS) claimed the killing of an Italian national, identified as Tavela Ceaser, in the Bangladeshi capital city of Dhaka”, the statement reads.

“We miss him and we extend our deepest, deepest condolences to his family … and loved ones”, Van Der Beek told reporters. Tavella was a technical director with Profitable Opportunities for Food Security (Proofs), a project of Netherlands-based organization ICCO Cooperation.

On Tuesday Bangladesh police said that they were analysing the CCTV footage collected from local offices including the Saudi Arabian embassy, as part of the investigation into the Italian’s murder.

Cricket Australia said it was seeking assurances from its Bangladesh counterpart before proceeding with the trip.

Echoing this warning, the British embassy said, “As of late September 2015 there is reliable information that militants may be planning to target western interests in Bangladesh”.

“There was another man on the bike and they fled”.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan sought to calm escalating security fears in the country, denying the extremist group was behind the murder on Monday night and describing it as an “isolated incident”.
