Islamic State Routed in Iraq Battle, U.S. Officials Say
Planning for the future battle of Mosul got a boost Thursday when Defense Secretary Ash Carter agreed to give the Kurdish peshmerga two brigade-size equipment sets to help them lead that fight.

It is just a matter of time before the Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh in Arabic) terrorist group is defeated by the Iraqi army, Australia’s chief of joint operations, Vice Adm. David Johnston, said Friday. It said that some Katyusha ÇNRA projectiles fell into the camp in the Bashiqa region during the clashes between ISIL and Peshmerga forces at around 3:10 p.m.
But aircraft from the anti-IS coalition will likely be making increased use of the Incirlik air base in southeastern Turkey in coming months, said Laura Seal, a Pentagon spokeswoman.
“They deserve it because they are effective on the ground, they are effective in the fight”, Mr. Carter said, standing beside a camouflaged tent housing American troops on a base here.
Carter signaled that the Obama administration would accelerate some arms deliveries to the Kurds. Biden and other USA officials have been working the phones for days, urging both Abadi and Turkey’s Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to resolve the dispute.
Ramadi, a provincial capital in the fertile Euphrates valley just a short drive west of Baghdad, was Islamic State’s biggest conquest since past year, and reversing it would be a major victory for the Iraqi government and its spectrum of allies, that includes the United States. They were armed with rockets, mounted machine guns and vehicle-born improvised explosive devices, officials said.
Baghdad says the Turkish military presence is a violation of its sovereignty.
Iraqi forces have begun to push Islamic State out of Ramadi in Iraq’s western province of Anbar, according to USA defense officials.

Odom estimated that at least 180 Islamic State fighters were killed in action. The secretary has taken opportunities to meet with Iraqi leaders and thank US and coalition troops for their service, especially during the holiday season. With coalition air support, they were able to counterattack and regain control of the bridge.
