Islanders sign RW Parenteau to 1-year deal

After trading Roman Polak to the San Jose Sharks at the trade deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs are bringing the physical defenseman back to the organization on a one-year contract. Term of the deal were not immediately available.

Part of Parenteau’s increased production stemmed from the fact he got top-six and power-play time because of the Maple Leafs’ roster. In 236 games across those four seasons, Parenteau recorded 139 points.

The 33 year-old, retures to the Islanders after playing for Colorado, Montreal and Toronto scored 41 points (20 goals, 21 assists) in 77 games last season with the Maple Leafs. With all the voices in the Leafs’ brain trust, seeing them make unorthodox decisions may be a bit unusual.

Leafs head coach Mike Babcock suggested last season that the club would look to add more grit and physicality in the summer – Martin the obvious fit to that need.

In other Maple Leafs news, the team has signed defenseman Justin Holl to an National Hockey League contract.

A former second round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, Holl – a native of Tonka Bay, Minnesota – played his first pro season predominantly at the ECHL level with Indy Fuel on a minor league deal with the Rockford Ice Hogs.
