Aboyne, Ballater & Braemar are feeling the worst effects of “Storm Frank” as towns all over Aberdeenshire are beginning to take precautions.

Storm Frank has battered parts of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland leaving more severe floods in its wake.

Its rain warning said up to 20mm could fall in areas in the South West and South Wales, rising to as much as 50mm in hilly areas such as the Brecon Beacons and Dartmoor.

Met Eireann said New Year’s Eve would be cold and frosty in Dublin city.

The balmy weather is down to a jet stream allowing warm air to come up from the south.

The tail end of Storm Frank will see temperatures drop significantly on Wednesday night, after wintery showers.

The heavy rain we have been predicted is not expected to let up.

“There is a yellow weather warning in place for Dublin, so the winds will be 50 to 60kmh, perhaps gusting at 90 to 100kmh. Levels in York will start to rise slowly overnight in response to today’s (Wednesday’s) rainfall, we now expect levels to reach up to 4m, or 13ft 2 inches, by Thursday evening”.

It also urged vigilance, warning that flooding may hit roads that otherwise had escaped this winter’s floods to date. It does depend on how each river responds though.

Meanwhile, footage from Graignamanagh in Co Kilkenny showed how a street lined with shops was transformed into a fast-flowing river of floodwater – with Ireland’s Meteorological Office enforcing a Status Orange warning for wind and rain until lunchtime.

Police, fire chiefs and council bosses gathered to prepare an action plan after the Met Office warned of heavy rainfall and high winds. Widely it will be between 20mm and 40mm. “We are aware that there are serious flooding problems in parts of the North of England and Wales”.

“One of the reasons I’m here is so that I can see it for myself, so we can make sure we are doing everything we reasonably can to help people with that recovery”.

“Flood waters have been receding slowly across flood hit areas, but rain will be falling on saturated ground, bringing the potential for further significant flooding”.
