Israel detains soldier seen shooting Palestinian on ground

Then a few feet away, an Israeli soldier is seen cocking his rifle, aiming and shooting the prone Palestinian in the head.

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) has opened a criminal investigation into the shooting, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly condemned the actions of the soldier.

Israeli soldiers killed another Palestinian youth last week near the Abu al-Arish checkpoint in al-Khalil. He and 20,000 other Israelis are suing the platform CEO.

The Palestinians, along with some foreign officials, such as Swedish foreign minister Margot Wallstrom, have accused Israel of using excessive force and killing assailants who have already been stopped or wounded.

Criticism was leveled against Israel by human rights groups and the Palestinians, who charge that numerous attackers killed did not pose a threat to lives anymore at the scenes of the attacks.

The database, which the Israeli government says would constitute an illegal blacklist, would reportedly cover business activity in the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights.

The Palestinian health ministry confirmed the deaths of two men but gave no further details.

Military spokesman Peter Lerner said “all of the soldiers involved will be investigated, as will the orders given”.

The video, provided by B’Tselem, an Israeli human rights organization, shows a small crowd of Israeli soldiers and medics standing around a Palestinian man lying on the ground.

“In light of the initial probe into the incident, a military police investigation has been launched”, the Israeli army said on Thursday.

Popular Palestinian support for stabbing attacks against Israelis is beginning to ebb, though most Palestinians still back a return to an armed intifada, a respected research center found in a poll published Monday.

According to the New York Times, 30 Israelis, two Americans and a Palestinian bystander have been killed in attacks by Palestinians since October, while Israeli soldiders have killed 180 Palestinians during the same period. The soldier suffered moderate injuries to the hand and torso.

Over 90 percent of Palestinian exports go to Israel, mainly because of the high costs of transporting goods to anywhere else.

The incident in Hebron marked the first attack since Saturday, breaking a rare calm spell amid a wave of violence in the West Bank and Israel that has raged for almost half a year.

Instead, the president today nominated Canadian academic Michael Lynk – despite global objections over Lynk’s leadership role in Palestinian campaign groups and his record of partisan and inflammatory statements on Israel – and declared that the labor lawyer from London, Ontario, was both impartial and objective.
