“We understand the tunnel was approximately 28 to 29 meters (100 feet) deep in the southern Gaza Strip, stretching from Gazan territory into Israel”.

Zeina al-Amour, 54, was killed when Israeli shelling hit her home in the eastern part of Khan Yunis, officials at Khan Yunis’ Nasser hospital told AFP.

Tensions are mounting high along the Israel-Gaza border on Wednesday due to at least four cross-border fire exchanges over the past day.

“Hamas holds the Israeli occupation completely responsible for the escalation east of Gaza and the consequences of it”, spokesman Sami Abu Zahri said.

Israel sees them as a strategic threat and Israeli media have reported alleged technological breakthrough in finding them. It is the second infiltration tunnel to be found in a month and comes as fighting escalates between Hamas and the Israeli army.

The conflict this week between Israel and the Gaza Strip continues to escalate.

The Israeli army (IDF) has uncovered a tunnel into Israel built by the Islamist Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip.

The IDF declared the border area a closed military zone on Wednesday, barring access from Saad Junction and the Kibbutz Nahal Oz to anyone but residents.

Zamir’s order pertains particularly to the area surrounding Kibbutz Sufa, which sits a few kilometers north of the Kerem Shalom crossing.

Israel has arrested a Hamas operative who belonged to the group’s military wing for a decade and has provided information about the group’s tunnel digging enterprise, the Shin Bet security service announced on Thursday. Twenty Israelis were injured in varying degrees in the attack.

Israeli forces have been engaged for the last three months in a renewed effort to locate Hamas tunnels.

The Israeli army said that a major target of the strikes was suspected infiltration tunnels under the border like those whose destruction it cited as one of the principal achievements of the 2014 conflict.
