Israel reimposes Al-Aqsa Mosque restrictions

Palestinians fear increasing visits by Jewish groups to al-Aqsa are eroding longtime Muslim religious control there.

Because of the violence, Israel announced it was reinstating restrictions on access to the Old City.

Netanyahu ordered the ban because of concerns that Jewish visits to the site could lead to more killings.

The Israeli military said “More than a thousand rioters infiltrated the buffer zone engaging the forces at the security fence”.

He added: “We have known worse times than this, and we will also overcome this wave of terrorism with determination, responsibility and unity”. She said they were confronted by thousands of rioters who hurled stones and firebombs at them. “We will prosecute them, and we will be victorious”.

The stabbing of the soldier took place in the southern town of Kiryat Gat. The woman, identified as 30-year-old Asra Zidan Tawfeeq Abed, was “moderately” wounded, according to Israeli police.

In Tel Aviv, a female Israeli soldier was stabbed with a screwdriver, allegedly by a Palestinian.

Paramedics said that four persons, including the soldier, suffered minor injuries in the attack. With the attacks spilling into the Israeli heartland, Netanyahu has warned Israelis to be on guard.

A Palestinian later stabbed a 14-year-old Israeli in Jerusalem, lightly wounding him before he was arrested, police said.

Ahmad Bitawi, the director of Ramallah hospital in the West Bank, said Wissam Jamal arrived at the hospital with a bullet wound to the chest after Thursday’s clashes at Shuafat refugee camp in Jerusalem.

Kiryat Arba is near the biblical city of Hevron, south of Jerusalem.

Israel has reintroduced a ban on male worshippers under the age of 50 entering the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem for Friday prayers.

The attacks were initially confined to east Jerusalem, site of the sacred compound, and the West Bank – both territories captured by Israel from Jordan in the 1967 war and claimed by the Palestinians for their future state.

The stabbings have deeply unnerved Israelis and authorities have struggled to prevent them.
