“Former president Peres’ doctors sedated and intubated him so as to best facilitate the continuation of his treatment”, it said.
The Independent reported later on Tuesday (13 September) that his condition was “stable”.
By then, he had been in Israeli politics for more than half a century, holding virtually every position in Israel’s Cabinet, from minister of defense to prime minister, a position he held twice.
His life is in danger, Israeli media report.
He said doctors were meeting to decide how to proceed.
The 93-year-old was taken to the Sheba Medical Centre in Tel Hashomer, near Tel Aviv, where doctors made a decision to sedate him in order to carry out further tests, Israeli daily Haaretz reported. Doctors administered a CT scan but have not released the results.
Peres was rushed to the hospital Tuesday after suffering a stroke.
Another TV station, Channel 2, reporting from the hospital, described the stroke as “significant” and “serious”.
He won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize for his work in reaching an interim peace agreement with the Palestinians.
After Rabin was assassinated in 1995, Peres became prime minister, calling early elections so the government would have a mandate to pursue a two-state solution.
Former president Shimon Peres attends the opening of the “Mini World Cup for Peace” soccer event at Herzlyia stadium on May 9, 2016. “In the coming hours, we will assess his condition”, hospital director Itzik Kreis said. She gave no further details.
He had remained active since completing his seven-year term as president in 2014, and even uploaded a video to his Facebook account earlier in the day.
