Israel’s Peres In Critical But Stable Condition After Stroke

“When we lessened the sedation, he woke up – not completely but definitely was responsive to our appeals to him”.

The 93-year-old is breathing with the help of a respirator and is undergoing further examinations, said Yitzhak Kreiss.

Standing alongside Kreiss, Peres’ son Chemi said the situation was “not simple”, but that the family was trying to stay positive.

His doctors chose to sedate him in order to “ease the continuation” of treatment, the statement said.

“He squeezed our hand and gave indication he is listening to us”, Valden said Wednesday morning.

This is good news compared to news from Israel on Tuesday where the former president suffered extensive inter-cranial bleeding following the stroke.

“It seems that we will soon be required to make decisions but not at the moment”. Perhaps most notably, Peres was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for negotiating the Oslo peace accord with the Palestinians, a prize he shared with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

He added that Peres was responsive during treatment overnight.

A little after midnight, a second doctor at the hospital, Shlomi Matetzky, who was directly treating Peres in intensive care, said the bleeding on his brain had been stopped, and that he was lightly sedated.

“I am optimistic. I am a great believer in my father. And I will take this opportunity on his behalf to send all of you his love”.

“I am following reports from the hospital with concern and praying together with the entire nation for the recovery of my friend Shimon”, said Peres’ successor and current President Reuven (Ruby) Rivlin.

Shimon Peres, then Israel’s president, speaks during a press conference in Sderot, Israel, July 6, 2014.

On January 14, 2016 the same hospital released the senior statesman in stable condition after he had suffered a mild heart attack.

In describing Israel ninth president Ghattas used words like “cruel and extreme”, accusing Peres of doing the most serious damage to his people, the Palestinians.
